Amazon FBA Returns Processing
Customer returns and removal orders are not dead inventory — they are unsorted stock. What separates a recoverable batch from a write-off is a disciplined inspect-grade-decide workflow applied the same way to every unit.
FBA returns processing is the work that happens after Amazon hands your units back: receiving and counting, opening and inspecting each unit, sorting it into condition grades, then executing a disposition — restock into FBA, refurbish and re-inject, liquidate in market, consolidate back to China, or destroy with a disposal record. FBAbridge coordinates the workflow with vetted warehouse partners and consolidates sellable grade stock at our Ningbo and Yiwu hubs when returning units to China.

The Four-Grade Returns Standard
Every unit gets exactly one grade, decided against a written standard — never an ad-hoc judgment call.
| Grade | Definition | Standard Disposition | Evidence Recorded |
|---|---|---|---|
| A · Sellable as new | Sealed or verified complete and unused; original packaging intact and clean. | Restock into FBA after relabel check. | Count per SKU, carton photos. |
| B · Sellable after repack | Product intact but box, polybag or insert damaged; needs re-boxing or new packaging only. | Re-prep, then restock or re-inject. | Defect photos, repack labor note. |
| C · Repairable / bundled | Minor functional or cosmetic fault, or a usable component of a set (e.g. one missing piece replaceable). | Repair, part-swap or multi-unit bundling; else liquidate. | Fault description, repair decision. |
| D · Unfulfillable | Broken, contaminated, expired or incomplete beyond economic repair. | Liquidate in market or certified destruction — never back to FBA. | Defect photos, disposal certificate reference. |
The Disposition Decision, in Order
- 1
Can it go back into FBA as-is (Grade A)? If yes, the cheapest route is relabel-verify and re-inject under a fresh shipment plan. This is always the first question because it recovers the most value per unit.
- 2
Does simple re-prep unlock Grade B stock? A torn polybag or crushed box kills a sellable unit at the FC gate but costs minutes to fix in a warehouse. Compare repack labor against the unit's landed value before deciding anything heavier.
- 3
Is in-market liquidation worth more than return freight? High-volume low-value Grade C/D stock usually is: local disposal or bulk sale beats paying ocean freight to repatriate products with thin resale value.
- 4
Should the remainder return to China? Sellable-grade stock with real future demand consolidates back to our Ningbo or Yiwu hubs for re-prep and relaunch — the route that preserves the most options when a listing is seasonal or region-shifting.
- 5
Destroy the rest, with a paper trail. Certified destruction closes the ledger: count, grade evidence and disposal record kept for your accounting and any future claim.
Where Returns Sit in Your Workflow
Grade A restocking runs through our transload & re-injection service. Repatriated sellable stock re-enters through the same China-side prep line as factory-fresh goods — see FBA prep.
Removal order mechanics, Amazon's graded-resale and liquidation options, and associated fees are set by Amazon and change over time — evaluate them inside Seller Central before outsourcing any batch.
Returns Processing FAQ
What is the difference between a removal order and a return-to-seller case?
A removal order moves unfulfillable or overstocked inventory out of Amazon's network to an address you choose — that is the mechanism that sends goods to a prep or transload warehouse. Customer return cases are units that came back from buyers. Our workflow covers both: intake, grading and a documented disposition decision for every unit.
How are returned units graded?
Each unit is opened, function-checked where feasible, and sorted into sellable-as-new, sellable-after-repack, repairable and unfulfillable grades. You receive a condition breakdown per SKU with photos of representative defects before any restocking labor is approved.
Can returned inventory be shipped back to China?
Yes, as a planned consolidation. Sellable grade units can return to our Ningbo or Yiwu hubs for re-prep and a future relaunch; scrap-grade stock is better destroyed locally under documented disposal. The economics depend on freight vs. unit value — we model both before you commit.
Should I use Amazon's own liquidation or graded resale programs instead?
For low-value SKUs, Amazon's built-in options are often the simplest route and should be evaluated first in Seller Central. Third-party processing wins when units are high-value, need repackaging to be resellable, or you want the same stock re-injected under your own listing rather than resold blind.
